Spectrophotometry tests
Specialists in the determination of spectral properties.
Spectrophotometry is an analytical technique with which it is possible to evaluate the electromagnetic radiation absorbed, transmitted or reflected by a material -whether in solid or liquid state- for each wavelength.
The proportion of incident radiation reflected by a sample or material at certain wavelengths is called reflectance, and it can be diffuse or specular. While in diffuse reflectance light is reflected in multiple directions, in specular reflectance light is reflected in the same direction as incident light.
On the other hand, the amount of radiation that a material absorbs is called its absorbance or optical density (OD).
Finally, the fraction or percentage of incident radiation that passes through a sample for given wavelengths is called transmittance. The measurement of transmittance allows knowing whether or not a material transmits UV, transparency in the visible spectrum, color -in the case of translucent materials- etc. It is possible to distinguish between regular and diffuse transmittance depending on how the transmittance is evaluated. Thus, while regular transmission occurs in transparent media, which allow clear vision through them, diffuse transmission occurs when the incident beam is diffused and transmitted in different directions.
Why Is This Important?
Spectrophotometry testing allows companies to accurately evaluate key optical properties such as transmittance, reflectance, and absorbance of their materials. This is essential for ensuring regulatory compliance, optimizing technical performance, and guaranteeing product quality in sectors such as automotive, construction, food processing, and textiles.
How do we do it
At Eyco, we conduct optical testing in accordance with nationally and internationally recognized technical standards, ensuring the reliability, traceability, and repeatability of the results. We use calibrated spectrophotometers covering the 200–2500 nm range (UV–VIS–NIR), always operating under controlled conditions. This allows us to accurately evaluate reflectance, transmittance, and absorbance in various materials, both solid and liquid. We offer standardized or custom-designed tests, tailored to the specific needs of each client and industry.
The result
Each test performed by Eyco is documented in a technical report that includes:
- The identification and description of the sample
- The standardized methods applied
- Test conditions
- The equipment used
- The results obtained
- Measurement uncertainty
The data is presented in a clear and traceable manner, including spectral graphs where appropriate, and meeting the necessary quality requirements.
