Signaling tests

The only accredited laboratory for the evaluation of photoluminescent products.

Signal testing is fundamental to safety, as it assesses how effectively a signal communicates a visual message, especially in emergency or low light conditions.

Signaling tests are crucial for safety, evaluating the effectiveness of a signal, especially in emergencies. A key aspect is measuring the luminance and decay time of photoluminescent products. Luminance is the angular, rectangular, and surface density of luminous flux incident on, passing through, or emerging from a surface in a given direction. Decay time is the time elapsed from the end of stimulation until the luminance decreases to 0.3 mcd/m².2.

Color and luminance factors in signage are also critical for regulatory compliance. Standards define specific chromaticity coordinates and luminance factors for safety colors (such as those used in fire protection systems or high-visibility clothing). These requirements ensure that the color is clear and identifiable under different lighting conditions.

Compliance with luminance and attenuation requirements is also a legal requirement for safety signs under the Fire Protection Installations Regulation (RIPCI).

Why Is This Important?

Conducting signage tests is vital because they ensure product safety and regulatory compliance. These tests verify that photoluminescent signs will maintain their visibility in the dark for the time necessary for a safe evacuation.

Furthermore, regarding high-visibility signaling clothing, the tests determine whether the clothing conforms to the color coordinates required by the UNE EN ISO 20471.

How do we do it

At Eyco, we specialize in the optical characterization of photoluminescent signs and products, as well as high-visibility signaling clothing and beacons.

We are the only accredited laboratory ENAC to determine the luminance and attenuation time in photoluminescent products under the Standard UNE 23035-1.

We performed measurements after subjecting the products to light excitation, and calculated the attenuation time by extrapolation.

Furthermore, we are accredited for measuring safety colors in fire protection systems (UNE 23033-1) and the determination of color coordinates in high-visibility clothing (UNE EN ISO 20471), ensuring that their products comply with the most rigorous safety standards.

The result

Each test performed by Eyco is documented in a technical report that includes:

  • The identification and description of the sample
  • The standardized methods applied
  • Test conditions
  • The equipment used
  • The results obtained
  • Measurement uncertainty

The data is presented in a clear and traceable manner, meeting the necessary quality requirements.
